1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
Overview
Introduced for 1968 as the ultimate evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s celebrated W113-generation SL, the 280SL combined Paul Bracq’s elegant “Pagoda” styling with the most powerful engine offered in the series. Its distinctive removable hardtop, upright Bosch headlamps, clean bodywork, and refined road manners helped establish the W113 as one of the defining European grand tourers of the 1960s. Power comes from Mercedes-Benz’s fuel-injected 2.8-liter M130 inline-six, factory rated at approximately 180 horsepower, and this 1969 example is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and power-assisted brakes.
Finished in its factory White (code 50G) over a tan interior, this 280SL is stated by the seller to retain its original engine, numbered 13098312006211, along with its original numbered hood and other original body panels. The seller further reports the presence of factory spot welds, headlamp notches, original floors, and inner and outer sills, while noting no known accident history or rust. Equipment includes dealer-installed Frigiking air conditioning, a floor-shifted automatic transmission, chrome roof bars, an outside rearview mirror, German canvas soft top, and a matching White removable hardtop. The interior is noted to have been reupholstered at some point, and an aftermarket stereo and speakers are presently installed; the original Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio is included with the sale.
Most recently, Malibu Motors, an independent Mercedes-Benz specialist in Santa Monica, California, serviced the car at 22,686 miles in May 2026. Work reportedly included replacement of the front brakes, an engine oil and filter service, new sun visors, and installation of a new ignition module and ignition coil. The seller states that the car presently wears new tires, that both the heating and air-conditioning systems function, and that no mechanical repairs are currently known to be required. Accompanied by Malibu Motors service receipts, its original Becker radio, spare wheel and associated trunk equipment, this 280SL presents as a well-equipped example of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most enduring open-top designs.
