1955 Jaguar XK 140 MC Roadster

The Jaguar XK 140 followed the landmark XK 120 with a series of thoughtful refinements that enhanced comfort, performance, and everyday usability, ensuring the model’s continued success—particularly in the crucial American market. Produced between 1954 and 1957, just over 3,300 XK 140 Roadsters left the factory, offering a more developed driving experience while retaining the elegant lines and sporting character that defined Jaguar’s postwar identity. This 1955 example was completed as a desirable SE, or “M” (for Modified in the US market), specification car and dispatched on 15 December 1954 via Hoffman in New York. Originally finished in Cream over Black with a French Grey soft top, it was first delivered to J.C. Wieland. Accompanying JDHT documentation notes that it was not originally equipped with a C-Type cylinder head when new, however, it has been upgraded with such during the restoration.

Today, the car presents in an eye-catching red over biscuit leather following a comprehensive restoration and is reported to have once resided in the renowned Blackhawk Collection. It is well equipped with period-style features including wire wheels, fog lamps, dual exhaust, and windshield washers, while benefiting from a series of carefully considered upgrades aimed at improving drivability. These include a five-speed transmission conversion, front disc brakes, an alternator disguised to resemble the original generator, a gear reduction starter, and an aluminum radiator paired with an auxiliary electric fan.

This XK 140 has proven its touring capability, having completed two rallies of approximately 1,000 miles each, most recently in 2017, demonstrating both reliability and road manners. The car has been maintained with an emphasis on usability, supported by service records on file, and it is further accompanied by a tonneau cover. In preparation for the sale, the battery has been replaced, ensuring readiness for immediate enjoyment. Combining attractive presentation with thoughtful mechanical enhancements, this XK 140 is ideally suited for long-distance touring events or relaxed open-top motoring.

 

The car is said to have been formerly part of the Blackhawk Collection. It was purchased by the seller in 2021 and is currently located in San Angelo, TX.
