1954 Kaiser Darrin

This 1954 Kaiser Darrin stands as one of only 435 examples produced—further believed to be the sole factory-finished example delivered in Onyx Black over a special-order maroon interior. Designed by the legendary Howard “Dutch” Darrin, this fiberglass-bodied roadster remains one of the most daring and forward-thinking American automobiles of the postwar era, famously debuting ahead of the Chevrolet Corvette as America’s first production fiberglass sports car. Its unmistakable styling is punctuated by the model’s novel sliding pocket doors, “pouty” grille, and distinctive three-position Landau convertible top. 

Benefitting from a meticulous, no-expense-spared concours-level restoration, this example’s rare specification presents as a unique expression among more commonly seen pastel finishes. A 161-cubic-inch Willys Hurricane F-head inline-six engine and three-speed manual transmission deliver smooth performance complemented by lightweight fiberglass construction. Optional equipment adds wire wheel covers, whitewall tires, dual wind wings, and tinted glass. Recently serviced in preparation for sale, the car performs is accompanied by desirable factory accessories and documentation, including its original Owner Identification Card, Owner Service Policy, removable side curtains, jack, and past concours awards.

Combining landmark American design and low-production rarity, this Kaiser Darrin occupies a singular place in postwar automotive history. As the earliest domestic fiberglass-bodied production sports car offered to the public, it represents a bold moment of innovation from Kaiser-Frazer and one of Dutch Darrin’s most celebrated creations. This early American sports car benefits from comprehensive refurbishment under previous ownership.
